Do you have a weakness for chocolate? I can’t say I fall into that large boat, but even I enjoy chocolate occasionally. My solution to these moments is unsweetened cocoa powder! Cocoa paired with fruit and/or agave gives you all the joy of chocolate without any drawbacks. It is naturally sweetened and there are no additives, oils or butter:-)
Every once in awhile I add some cocoa to my smoothies and it makes for quite the treat. A little cocoa goes a long way though so make sure to add it in a little bit at a time. Unsweetened cocoa powder is pretty bitter and if you add too much it will take a lot of sweetener to balance it out.
Yesterday I started out my day with one of these smoothies and it was… divine. Usually I add some leafy greens to my smoothies, but every once in a while it is nice to drink something that isn’t green. Don’t get me wrong, I love my spinach and kale smoothies, but this one was so beautiful that it was worth leaving the greens out:-)
I believe that some flavors are simply meant to be together: peanut butter and banana, apples and cinnamon, strawberry and banana, chocolate and strawberry. It was only a matter of time before this smoothie came to be. One might even call it destiny:-)
I personally go light on the cocoa powder and let the strawberries dominate. The result is a strawberry smoothie with an undercurrent of chocolate flavor. This way I can still get my “chocolate fix” without drowning my smoothie in agave. Obviously there will be some who want the chocolate flavor to dominate and that is just fine. We all have our personal preferences.
Strawberry Chocolate Delight
1 C almond milk
1 t vanilla
2 T protein powder
1 T cocoa powder
2 C frozen strawberries
1-2 T agave or to taste
Dash of cinnamon
Handful of ice cubes
- Soften strawberries in the microwave and add all ingredients to a high-speed blender. Blend until smooth:-)
Isn’t it so pretty?
Smoothies always seem like a treat to me, but smoothies like this one seem especially dessert like. I feel like a little kid who talked her mom into letting her have sweets for breakfast. The best part is, that while it might taste like dessert, it still has a lot of health benefits. Almond milk is calcium rich, the protein powder supplies a good source of… protein:-), cocoa powder contains some essential minerals and aids in preventing a number of health problems, cinnamon is a metabolism booster among other benefits, and strawberries have a number of health merits such as boosting immunity and regulating blood pressure. Who knew one smoothie could do so much?
Enjoy and have a great weekend!
