Nectarine banana oat green smoothie

I intended to make oatmeal for breakfast yesterday, but I decided it was more of a smoothie morning.  I still added a few oats as a way to combine the two together.  Every once in a while an oat smoothie really hits the spot.  I usually try to save oat smoothies for high activity days such as an intense workout or a long hike.  A little extra energy is always appreciated on those days.  Yesterday I didn’t have any intense workout plans, but an oatmeal smoothie just sounded good:-)

I had a nectarine that had finally ripened and it was begging me to eat it. This summer I have rediscovered the wonder of peaches and nectarines.  They are so good!  I think the sign of a perfect peach or nectarine is when they are so juicy that you have to eat them over the sink, a bowl, ect.  They are also beautiful and so much fun to photograph!  Just looking at the pictures makes me want to eat another one… which I probably will:-)

This smoothie, like most, is packed with my favorite leafy green — frozen spinach!  I know green isn’t the most appetizing color to drink, but I love adding all the nutrients and vegetables into my breakfast without tasting a difference.  (This is a great way to add more vegetables to your kid’s diet.)  It always feels amazing to start off the day putting the right ingredients into your body.

Nectarine Banana Oat Green Smoothie

1 C almond milk

1 t vanilla

2 T protein powder

1 banana

1 nectarine

Cinnamon, dash

¼ C oats

Nutmeg, 2 pinches

Several handfuls of frozen spinach

A few ice cubes

Agave to taste

  1. Add all ingredients to a high-speed blender and mix until smooth.

Remember my motto — recipes are just guidelines.  A recipe is the preference of one person.  If you don’t like oats in your smoothie that is totally fine, simply leave the oats out.  If you prefer kale to spinach then load your smoothie up with kale.  If you don’t like nectarines, actually I really hope that is not the case because they are amazing:-) Always remember to make a recipe fit your needs and your tastes.  Once your smoothie is made to your liking all you need to do is enjoy it:-) Have a fabulous weekend!
